Toledo Public Schools responds to teacher cheating scandal

TOLEDO — The teacher cheating scandal gripping Atlanta and gaining national attention would not happen in Toledo, an administrator from northwest Ohio’s largest school district told WNWO News Thursday.

A state investigation in Georgia found 178 teachers and principals engaged in changing incorrect answers to the correct answers on standardized tests during a 10-year period.

Jim Gault, chief academic officer for Toledo Public Schools, said the district strictly follows state guidelines and checks on security when it comes to standardized tests. Gault said extra administrators watch the testing take place. He did not want to speak publicly about the other checks the district uses.

What do you think school districts can do to prevent student and teacher cheating? Does tying teacher pay to student performance put too much pressure on teachers and lead to this type of scandal? Weigh in below and on our WNWO Facebook page.
