Toledo school board, teachers’ union approve new deal

The Toledo Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a fact finder’s report on a new two-year contract with the Toledo Federation of Teachers.

The TFT held three votes with its union members earlier in the day and approved the compromise measure as well.

In his report, the fact finder, a form of binding mediation and arbitration, called for teachers to pay more for their health care and take a 2.5% pay cut. Twenty-five jobs will be eliminated as part of the deal, but art, music and physical education positions previously on the chopping block were spared.

TFT President Francine Lawrence said the teachers’ support for concessions shows their willingness to put the students’ best interests ahead of their own economic well-being.

A WNWO News crew was at the school board meeting and will bring you their reaction tonight on NBC 24 News at 11.
