LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville and Rutgers are strikingly similar.

Both feature pressure-minded coaches who have built top 20 defenses. True freshmen quarterbacks have taken over units still learning to rack up yards. They were picked next to last and last, respectively, in the Big East preseason media poll.

However, Rutgers has separated itself in the category that counts most: Wins.

The Scarlet Knights visit Louisville on tonight sitting atop the Big East .

Rutgers has been more opportunistic. The Scarlet Knights are tied for most turnovers forced in the nation with 24, while Louisville has just 10 takeaways. The two offenses gain just about the same amount of yards, but Rutgers uses the extra possessions to score 30.3 points per game, nearly twice Louisville’s 16.3.

Louisville coach Charlie Strong covets the field position and points Rutgers’ defense produces.

“What our defense isn’t doing is creating the short field,” Strong said. “The turnovers are creating the short field for their offense. Plus, they’re intercepting balls and running back for touchdowns.

The university of Missouri announced that the Board of Curators have given chancellor Brady Deaton the authority to make decisions regarding conference realignment.

The move, which was announced on Friday, could open the door for the Tigers to leave the Big 12 Conference if it receives an offer from another conference such as the SEC.

No timetable was given for the next step but Deaton said, “Were not looking at a long time frame,” indicating something could happen sooner than later.

The Big 12 has already lost Nebraska and Colorado this season and will lose Texas A&M next season. The league has already added TCU as a replacement for the Aggies and interim Big 12 commissioner Chuck Neinas indicated earlier this month that if Missouri stays the conference is satisfied with 10 members but if Missouri leaves, the league will look to add two other members.

Louisville and West Virginia have been mentioned as possible candidates for the Big 12 if Missouri leaves.

The curators also directed Deaton to explore the possibility of an invitational basketball tournament involving Missouri in Kansas City as well as a football game against a traditional regional rival.

According to The Associated Press, the move appears to be directed at concerns that leaving the Big 12 for the SEC will damage traditional rivalries such as the one Missouri has with Kansas. Bot

Indiana: Cream 11 Crimson 1

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The 2011 IU Baseball Cream vs. Crimson Fall Series will go to a game five as the Cream Squad blasted Crimson, 11-1, on Saturday. Chad Martin delivered five shutout innings on the mound for the second time in the series, striking out eight batters in game four.

Freshman Collin McEnery starred as well for Team Cream, driving in five runs on 3-for-3 batting with a three-run homer and two-run double. He also made his way to the mound, closing out the contest by allowing just one hit in the final two shutout innings.

Blackhawk College 5 Iowa 3

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball concluded its fall season competition schedule last night with a 5-3 loss in 11 innings to Blackhawk College. Iowa played a number of its freshmen and sophomores to help the newcomers gain valuable game experience.

“We put a concert on my senior year, and we just dressed in whatever,” said McCoy, a defensive lineman for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and former University of Oklahoma standout. “The band experience was always great. I had a blast with it.”

Friday, for the first time in nearly two decades, the Southeast High School band marched wearing real uniforms, thanks to a donation by McCoy through the Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools.

Worn with pride

Royal blue with a silver sash, the uniforms gave Southeast students a sense of pride and legitimacy they lacked in jeans and T-shirts.

The order arrived just in time for the school’s homecoming parade and football game Friday.

“They even sounded better,” said Band Director David Nixon. “The uniforms we had before were purchased in 1963, and they have not been in service for the last 20 years.”

Nixon said several fundraising attempts were started and fizzled out unsuccessfully over the years.

That’s where the famous Southeast High School alumnus stepped in.

In May during a surprise visit to Southeast, McCoy announced he would supply the school with new drums and new uniforms.
