Pa. education secretary orders probes, new analysis of PSSA test scores

PHILADELPHIA Pennsylvania’s secretary of education is ordering more than three dozen school districts to conduct internal investigations of suspicious scores on state standardized tests.

William Penn High School in Harrisburg, Pa.The majority of the schools listed in the report on 2009 test scores are in the Philadelphia region. Two Harrisburg schools were mentioned for aberrations.

Ronald Tomalis said Thursday that the districts must report back to the state within 30 days.

The move stems from the recent disclosure of a report identifying possible cheating on the 2009 math and reading exams known as the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment, or PSSA.

Tomalis says he has also asked the company that conducted the forensic analysis to compile a report on 2010 scores as well.

The 2009 report surfaced only last week after it was obtained by a news organization. Tomalis was not in office in 2009; his predecessor has denied ever seeing the document.
