ACLU says Web filter may violate student rights at Southland high school

The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California said Tuesday that a Southland school district is potentially violating students’ constitutional rights by blocking access to informational gay and lesbian Web sites.

ACLU attorneys say the Rowland Unified School District in the San Gabriel Valley uses computer software to keep students from seeing the Web sites of groups that include the Gay Straight Alliance Network and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance against Defamation.

The civil liberties group argues that blocking those sites could potentially harm students who’ve dealt with bullying or worse because of their sexual orientation. Officials from the school district were not available for comment.

“It is not our intent or desire to discriminate against LGBT-related content and block student access,” said Rowland Unified Superintendent Maria Ott in a written statement. “M86 Solutions is the company that our LEA (Local Education Agency), the Los Angeles County Office of Education uses. We ar

Report Highlights The Problem Of Rising Community College Tuition.

As the cost of college continues to go up at four-year institutions, many have turned to community colleges for the golden ticket because of their affordable prices. However, it is getting harder and harder to call community colleges the exception when it comes to rising tuition.

According a report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, over the past decade, the cost of tuition at two-year colleges has increased sharply, while median family earnings have lost ground. Harrisburg High’s School of Business and Industry, on hiatus for now, will be protected amid budget cuts

Clenistine N. Dunson knows a thing or two about motivating young people. After all, she spent four decades as an educator. For starters, dont write them off, she said.

Show your concern for them, Dunson said.

Dunson applied that teaching mantra to head a little-known program out of Harrisburg High School that, for the last 20 years, defied the woes that plague the school district.

Dunson, a business education teacher who started her career teaching typing, launched and ran the School of Business and Industry, an honors program that immersed students in the world of business and prepared them for careers, even ownership.

As Dunson recently packed up an office filled with 41 years of teaching memorabilia, she hoped her departure would not mean the end of the program.

The program has been put on hold for the coming academic year, but a steering committee has formed to keep it off the districts cutting board.

Faced with a crushing budget shortfall, the Harrisburg School Board last week approved a budget for 2011-12 that calls for hundreds of layoffs and closure of three schools and the space that houses the Career Technical Academy in the former William Penn High School.

The district is going through so much.
