House Today House
UCF President John Hitt is to speak to state lawmakers later this morning, as part of a collegial dialogue on higher education in Florida.
The presidents of UF and FSU spoke to the Florida Houses education committee on Friday, urging more money for universities particularly as they push for more students to pursue STEM degrees.
Hitt is the first of six university presidents slated to address the committee today.
House lawmakers discussions with university presidents come at the behest of Speaker Dean Cannon, who on the opening day of the Legislature said Floridas universities have no clear mission are are aggressively racing to the middle.
Cannon said he wanted to start a discussion about how to improve higher education, though he wasnt sure the conversations would lead to legislation right away.

ekg technician training
EKG technicians assist cardiologists in determining and treating heart ailments. They need to know how to interpret patient files, and monitor patients’ heartbeat. They also operate and care for testing equipment, explain test procedures, and compare results to a standard to identify problems. That’s why taking EKG technician training is so important. Though activities can vary significantly between medical facilities, training is a real advantage.

EKG technicians may specialize in 3 branches: invasive cardiology, noninvasive, including echocardiography or vascular technology. An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is necessary if there is a blockage in blood vessels or to diagnose other problems. S

Waive Waive Extradition
At a hearing Monday in Bloomsburg, Pa., attorneys for 65-year-old Gary Doby refused to waive extradition and requested a full hearing. Columbia County, Pa., Assistant District Attorney Brenda Hess says an extradition hearing will be held on Feb. 21 to determine if Doby is the individual wanted in Oklahoma.
Oklahoma prosecutors last month charged Doby and former McLoud school teacher 48-year-old Kimberly Ann Crain, in the case in which prosecutors allege Crain took photographs of as many as 14 young girls while they were changing and shared them with Doby.
Doby remains jailed in Columbia County on a $500,000 bond. His Pennsylvania attorney, Cleveland Hummel, did not immediately return a telephone message.

Alabama (2011)
Buzz: The Crimson Tide started the season ranked No. 2 in both The Associated Press and USA Today coaches’ preseason polls. Grammar School New Principal Principal
A new principal is to be appointed at Cambridge House — the only grammar school in Northern Ireland to be put in the Department of Education’s formal intervention scheme.
The Ballymena school for pupils aged 11-18 was placed in formal intervention in June after receiving a damning inspection report.
Whoever takes up the top post will have the task of turning the school around and helping it exit formal intervention.
Inspectors who visited the school in April criticised:
- inadequate standards achieved by pupils in sixth form
- a fall in the number of pupils from 42% to 40% securing three A-levels at grades A*-C, which is below the Northern Ireland average for selective schools
- poor monitoring and evaluation of sixth form provision
- inadequate admissions criteria for Year 14
- the majority of lessons, which were observed were either satisfactory or inadequate
- the proportion of pupils dropping out at the end of Year 13 was “too high” and well above the Northern Ireland average
- the overall quality of provision was “inadequate”
- insufficient planning for teaching in sixth form.
However, the successful candidate will be well rewarded for the job with a maximum advertised salary of 72,752.
