Stockton men’s basketball ends Montclair’s five-game win streak

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP – The Richard Stockton College men’s basketball team shot the ball the same way Wednesday night as it had all season. The Ospreys ran the same plays and executed the same passes.

However, coach Gerry Matthews noticed one major difference.

The Ospreys played with passion.

The result was a 72-69 win over Montclair State in their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener. Stockton snapped Montclair’s five-game winning streak in the process.

“We played with some life,” said Matthews, who is three wins shy of 500 for his career. “It seemed like everyone was into it, and that’s half the battle, getting them to realize they can play a bit.”

But the life Matthews noticed was more evident in the second half than the first. Stockton trailed by as much as 11 points in the first half, and it seemed as though the Red Hawks were going to pull away.

A few tweaks on defense and a bigger effort rebounding, and the Ospreys were right back in the game.

Shooting nearly 60 percent in the second half didn’t hurt either.

“We are one step closer to being a team we know we can be,” said Stockton senior DiAndre Brown, who had 18 points and nine rebounds.
